ISTH World Thrombosis Day campaign welcomes Steering Committee Chair Erich De Paula and Vice Chair Marcello Di Nisio
De Paula (Brazil) and Di Nisio (Italy) underscore the campaign’s commitment to global representation through education and awareness initiatives
CHAPEL HILL, NC, U.S., January 6, 2025 – World Thrombosis Day (WTD), a global initiative of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), announces the appointment of Erich De Paula, M.D., Ph.D., as Chair of its Scientific Steering Committee, alongside Marcello Di Nisio, M.D., Ph.D., of Italy, who will serve as Vice Chair. De Paula is the campaign’s inaugural Steering Committee Chair to represent South America.
Following its launch in 2014, the World Thrombosis Day campaign continues to make significant strides in raising awareness about blood clots, which are a leading cause of global death and disability. In 2024, the campaign reached more than 4 billion people across 125 countries.
Lana Castellucci, M.D., of Canada most recently served as Steering Committee Chair from 2022-2024. Under De Paula and Di Nisio’s leadership, the World Thrombosis Day Steering Committee is comprised of 16 global experts who specialize in areas such as public health, hematology, thrombosis, hemostasis, vascular and general internal medicine.
“I am honored to serve in this new role and to lead the continued growth of the campaign,” said De Paula. “Thrombosis is a major global health challenge, and I am particularly passionate about expanding our reach and impact in under-represented regions of the world, including those with diverse healthcare challenges.”
De Paula is a hematologist based in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. He serves as Vice Dean and Associate Professor of Hematology at the University of Campinas School of Medicine. He has held numerous leadership roles, including with the Latin American Cooperative Group of Hemostasis and Thrombosis (CLAHT), the Brazilian Association of Hematology and Hemotherapy (ABHH) and the Brazilian Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis (BSTH).
Di Nisio is a staff Internist and associate professor at the Department of Internal Medicine of the University G. D’Annunzio in Chieti, Italy. He is also the Research Group Leader for its Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis. He has co-authored the guidelines on the management of venous thromboembolism in cancer patients for the Italian Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, the Italian Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Haematology and the European Society of Medical Oncology.
“I look forward to advancing the campaign’s research and education initiatives, especially for vulnerable groups like elderly patients, pregnant women, and patients with cancer,” said Di Nisio. “There is much work to be done to improve patient awareness and, together, we hope to strengthen global efforts for thrombosis prevention and treatment.”
