World Thrombosis Day Appoints Erich de Paula As Vice Chair of Scientific Steering Committte
CHAPEL HILL, NC, USA, March 20, 2023 – The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) welcomes Erich V. De Paula, M.D., Ph.D., as the 2023-2025 World Thrombosis Day Steering Committee Vice Chair.
De Paula is an Associate Professor of Hematology at University of Campinas in Brazil, as well as the Vice-Dean of the University of Campinas School of Medicine. He is a member of many professional organizations, including the Brazilian Association of Hematology and Hemotherapy (ABHH) and the Brazilian Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis (BSTH). He has been a member of the World Thrombosis Day Steering Committee for four years.
De Paula is the first member from South America appointed to a Chair or Vice Chair position on the World Thrombosis Day Steering Committee. Both South America and Latin America are increasingly impactful regions of the World Thrombosis Day awareness campaign, and De Paula’s appointment highlights an important opportunity to expand in these regions and offer new campaign resources in languages such as Spanish and Portuguese.
“I am honored to serve as Vice Chair for the World Thrombosis Day Steering Committee, particularly as we recognize the campaign’s 10th anniversary this year,” said De Paula. “It is an exciting time for World Thrombosis Day and I look forward to building upon the campaign’s mission to help save lives across the world.”
World Thrombosis Day was founded in 2014 by the ISTH in response to the global lack of awareness of thrombosis, commonly referred to as blood clots. World Thrombosis Day seeks to shine a global spotlight on the condition, including its causes, risk factors, signs/symptoms and evidence-based prevention and treatment.
De Paula will lead alongside Chair Lana Castellucci, M.D., and the entire global scientific Steering Committee, which is comprised of 14 members from across the globe. De Paula will serve a two-year term before advancing into the role of Chair of the Steering Committee.
