Make blood clot awareness part of your everyday life
Blood clot awareness shouldn’t live on a calendar. While World Thrombosis Day (WTD) on October 13 is a powerful moment to unite around a global cause, the conversations, habits and actions that save lives happen year-round. Whether you’re a patient, a clinician, a researcher, a policymaker or simply someone who wants to make a difference, there are meaningful ways to weave blood clot awareness into your daily routine and show up stronger when October arrives. Read below for how you can make a differenc all year long.
For patients and survivors
Your story is one of the most powerful awareness tools that exists and sharing your story can save lives. We invite you to share your story with the WTD campaign through our #MyClotStory program. Talk openly with your doctor about your personal risk factors at routine appointments, not just follow-ups. The WTD campaign has partners around the world with strong patient support communities that can help you connect with others navigating the same experience. When the WTD campaign launches, that foundation will make it easy to step into advocacy, whether that means sharing your story publicly or simply starting a conversation with a friend.
For healthcare professionals
Awareness starts at the point of care. Make it a habit to screen patients for blood clot risk during routine visits, not just acute episodes. Share WTD resources with patients who may be at elevated risk, including those who are pregnant, recently postpartum, taking hormonal medications or managing chronic illness. Follow the WTD social media channels now so you’re ready to share evidence-based content with your networks when the campaign launches in the fall.
For researchers
Science communication is awareness. Consider making it a regular practice to translate your work into plain language, even a short social media post or blog summary that explains what your research means for patients. Connect with patient advocacy groups whose communities could benefit from your findings. Leading up to WTD, think about how your current work ties into this year’s campaign theme and where you might contribute a data point, a quote or a collaboration.
For policymakers
Blood clot prevention is a public health and policy issue that often goes unrecognized. Build awareness into your everyday work by familiarizing yourself with the burden thrombosis places on healthcare systems and the populations most affected, including women, older adults and people with limited access to care. Engage with the organizations already doing this work so that when WTD arrives, you’re positioned to amplify the message with the authority your platform carries.
For the general public
You don’t need a medical background to make a difference. Learning the signs of a blood clot, knowing your personal risk factors and talking to your doctor if something feels off are all everyday acts of health literacy that matter. Follow WTD on social media, join the campaign and get familiar with this year’s theme before October. When the campaign launches, you’ll be ready to share, post and spread the word in your own community.
Start now, show up in October
World Thrombosis Day is most powerful when people arrive prepared. The habits you build today, the conversations you start, the resources you bookmark and the networks you join become the foundation for a more impactful campaign. No matter your role, there is a place for you in this movement. Start now and help make October 13 the moment the world stops and listens.
