The Lancet Haematology Shares Editorial on WTD Achievements; Importance of VTE Prevention

October 3, 2019

The Lancet Haematology has published a new editorial, “World Thrombosis Day — 5 Years On,” highlighting the successes of the World Thrombosis Day campaign to date. Since its launch in 2014, the campaign has secured more than 2,000 partners in 100+ countries and it is estimated to have reached more than 3 billion people, spreading the word on the causes, risk factors, symptoms, and evidence-based prevention and treatment of thrombosis.

The editorial underscores why The Lancet Haematology supports the ISTH statement calling for venous thromboembolism (VTE) to be included as a specific cause of death in the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors (GBD) studies, which could generate the necessary data to inform policy and prevention strategies going forward. It also encourages the thrombosis research community to generate high-quality evidence that can support the safe and effective treatment of pediatric VTE.
