IPSOS Survey
World Thrombosis Day conducted the first global assessment on public awareness of VTE in 2014. The survey was conducted in 9 countries with data from more than 7,200 individuals and provided the foundation for the campaign. Note: A World Thrombosis Day 10th anniversary IPSOS Survey will be conducted in 2023. Major Findings:
- VTE is far more common than most assume and is a major contributor to global burden of disease across high, middle and low income regions
- VTE is the leading cause of premature death and disability among hospital-associated adverse events
- Public awareness of VTE is significantly lower than other conditions such as prostate cancer, breast cancer and AIDS, which case a substantially lower disease burden
- Knowledge of VTE risk factors, including hospitalization, surgery and cancer, is low as is awareness that the condition can be prevented
