With little documented on global death and disability due to VTE, the World Thrombosis Day Steering Committee published two monumental research projects: the most comprehensive scientific review of the global burden of VTE ever undertaken (more than 8,000 citations), and the first global assessment on public awareness of VTE (conducted in 9 countries and with data from more than 7,200 individuals).
- VTE is far more common than most assume and is a major contributor to global burden of disease across high, middle and low incom regions
- VTE is the leading cause of premature death and disability among hospital-associated adverse events
- Public awareness of VTE is significantly lower than other conditions such as prostate cancer, breast cancer and AIDS, which case a substantially lower disease burden
- Knowledge of VTE risk factors, including hospitalization, surgery and cancer, is low as is awareness that the condition can be prevented
