World Thrombosis Day

The global world thrombosis day movement

SCIENTIFIC research and publications

With little documented on global death and disability due to VTE, the World Thrombosis Day Steering Committee published two monumental research projects: the most comprehensive scientific review of the global burden of VTE ever undertaken (more than 8,000 citations), and the first global assessment on public awareness of VTE (conducted in 9 countries and with data from more than 7,200 individuals).

Major Findings:

  • VTE is far more common than most assume and is a major contributor to global burden of disease across high, middle and low incom regions
  • VTE is the leading cause of premature death and disability among hospital-associated adverse events
  • Public awareness of VTE is significantly lower than other conditions such as prostate cancer, breast cancer and AIDS, which case a substantially lower disease burden
  • Knowledge of VTE risk factors, including hospitalization, surgery and cancer, is low as is awareness that the condition can be prevented

Full research, published in the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH), is available for download.
